TRAINING OUTLINE
Skill 3 Carrying out emergency manoeuvres specific to Duration: 30 h
the marine district
Module 3
Emergency manoeuvres
Component 1 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 9 h
planning emergency manoeuvres.
Training environment
In the classroom and in the simulator:
• for emergency situations such as breakdowns, collisions, groundings, fires, taking on water,
search and rescue operations, shipwrecks, man overboard;
• teamwork;
• on the basis of data provided by instructor;
• using emergency procedures in the International Safety Management Code (ISM).
Note: All data in the module training outlines relate to the marine district under study.
CONTENT
1. Reviewing types of emergencies and
reminding candidates of the need to be
ready for any contingency.
2. High-risk areas in the marine district.
3. Adapting standard manoeuvres.
4. Procedures:
– notify Vessel Traffic Services;
– security call.
5. Preparing emergency orders appropriate to
the ship.
SUGGESTED METHODS
Instructor
• Introduce module and its three components.
Discuss with the group how the training is
organized: candidates will work
independently, in the classroom, and in
the simulator.
• Present an audio-visual document about
various accidents that have occurred in the
marine district.
• Analyse them with candidates and discuss
possible factors.
• Remind candidates of the value of preparing
emergency orders that are appropriate for
the ship and the marine district. Preparing
and practising emergency orders provides a
solid base if the trouble is taken to do them
properly. A well-prepared officer can
rapidly handle deviations required by
random factors.
