2.1 Precisely measure bearings and distances<br />

from lights, leading lines, principal<br />

recognized landmarks.<br />

2.2 Check accuracy of buoy and beacon system.<br />

2.3 Correctly position ship on the basis of radar<br />

information, including hypothetical<br />

alignments and racon bearings.<br />

2.4 Recognize location of cities and towns.<br />

2.5 Know distances and bearings of easily<br />

identifiable targets to confirm ship’s<br />

position.<br />

2.6 Make judicious use of known markers for<br />

course changes.<br />

2.7 Carry out critical checks using electronic<br />

chart.<br />

Performance criteria<br />

3.1 Rapidly analyse gathered data:<br />

– Notices to Shipping;<br />

– information from bridge watch;<br />

– information from navigational aids.<br />

3.2 Take into account ship’s anticipated<br />

behaviour.<br />

3.3 Properly anticipate squat.<br />

3.4 Make appropriate decisions in extreme<br />

weather conditions based on ship’s position.<br />
