Docking manoeuvres<br />
Component 1 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 9 h<br />
planning manoeuvres.<br />
Training environment<br />
In the classroom:<br />
• on the basis of scenarios describing operating parameters and information obtained from<br />
Vessel Traffic Services;<br />
• on the basis of the characteristics specific to each candidate’s ship;<br />
• using ship’s technical documentation; books on wharves and harbour facilities in the marine<br />
district; documentation on regulations; marine charts; tidal almanacs; tidal current charts.<br />
Note: All data in the module training outlines relate to the specific marine district.<br />
CONTENT<br />
1. Reviewing general information regarding<br />
factors affecting manoeuvres at wharves.<br />
2. Specifics of wharves and harbour facilities:<br />
– location;<br />
– types of wharves;<br />
– tidal currents indicated on charts;<br />
– local currents;<br />
– wharf sheltered or not;<br />
– environment, etc.<br />
3. Characteristics of manoeuvring area for<br />
each wharf.<br />
4. Known visual navigational aids at each<br />
wharf, such as steering lights, leading lines,<br />
buoys, etc.<br />
SUGGESTED METHODS<br />
Instructor<br />
• Introduce module and its objectives.<br />
• Lead a group discussion that will enable<br />
candidates to demonstrate their knowledge<br />
of:<br />
– wharves and harbour facilities in the<br />
marine district;<br />
– hazards specific to each facility;<br />
– manoeuvring characteristics of their<br />
respective ships, etc.<br />
• With the group, go over factors that have to<br />
be taken into account when planning<br />
manoeuvres at wharves.<br />
• Provide scenarios for situations requiring<br />
planning, as well as relevant instructions.<br />
