4.3 Maintain constant two-way radio watch on<br />
established frequency in escort situations.<br />
4.4 Closely co-operate with icebreaker captain.<br />
4.5 Correctly interpret sound, visual, and radio<br />
signals specifically used in communications<br />
with an icebreaker.<br />
4.6 When in convoy, strictly maintain distance<br />
between ships ordered by commander of<br />
operations.<br />
4.7 Correctly anticipate escorting icebreaker’s<br />
manoeuvres.<br />
Performance criteria<br />
5.1 Judiciously select best courses.<br />
5.2 Accurately assess speed for entering ice<br />
when navigating without escort.<br />
5.3 Maintain a speed that will keep ship under<br />
control at all times.<br />
5.4 Accurately gauge best time to negotiate a<br />
difficult passage.<br />
5.5 Take traffic into account before undertaking<br />
a difficult passage.<br />
5.6 Clearly identify conditions dictating<br />
recourse to an icebreaker.<br />
