Skill 1 Planning the passage into the marine district Duration: 120 h<br />
Module 1<br />
Passage plan<br />
Component 3 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 36 h<br />
indicating visual aid information on the chart.<br />
Training environment<br />
In the classroom and independently:<br />
• using conventional and electronic charts;<br />
• using legend chart and documentation for the marine district, List of Lights, buoys and fog<br />
signals;<br />
• using plotting instruments.<br />
CONTENT<br />
1. Buoy and beacon system used in the marine<br />
district.<br />
2. Types of fixed and floating aids recorded on<br />
charts:<br />
– principal lights, clearance marks, buoys,<br />
beacons, facilities, and objects indicating<br />
a passage free of obstacles to navigation;<br />
– visual aids indicating shallow waters;<br />
– known natural leading lines and manmade<br />
leading lines.<br />
3. Location, features, and range of<br />
navigational aids.<br />
4. Calculating distances between visual aids<br />
and course made good.<br />
5. Danger bearings:<br />
– locate existing bearings on the chart;<br />
– calculate other danger bearings;<br />
– calculate safe bearings.<br />
SUGGESTED METHODS<br />
Instructor<br />
• Generate interest with an exercise testing<br />
candidates’ knowledge. For example,<br />
identify on the marine district chart lesserknown<br />
visual aid symbols or identify visual<br />
aids by category, etc.<br />
• Introduce module and alternate with<br />
practical exercises. Gradually increase level<br />
of complexity to aid memorization.<br />
• A video presenting the various visual aids in<br />
the marine district would be a good training<br />
tool.<br />
Candidates<br />
• Study buoy and beacon system and principal<br />
fixed aids using charts and technical<br />
documentation.<br />
