Component 6 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 12 h<br />

anchoring the ship.<br />

Training environment<br />

In the classroom and in the simulator:<br />

• teamwork;<br />

• using technical documentation, charts and plotting instruments;<br />

• on the basis of data describing the situation.<br />

CONTENT<br />

1. Anchorages in the marine district and their<br />

characteristics.<br />

2. Factors to be considered in choosing an<br />

anchorage:<br />

– available manoeuvring area;<br />

– depth;<br />

– nature of the bottom;<br />

– regulations;<br />

– prohibitions.<br />

3. Ship’s swinging circle at anchor and ways<br />

of establishing it on the basis of factors to<br />

be considered:<br />

– ship’s technical data;<br />

– ships nearby;<br />

– anticipated weather conditions;<br />

– length of chain to be veered out;<br />

– tides.<br />

4. Ship’s manoeuvring characteristics to be<br />

taken into consideration.<br />

SUGGESTED METHODS<br />

Instructor<br />

• Program simulations with difficult weather<br />

conditions and various anchorages.<br />

Candidates<br />

• Memorize designated anchorages and their<br />

characteristics:<br />

– depth;<br />

– nature of the bottom;<br />

– extent of available manoeuvring area.<br />

• Analyse ship’s technical data with respect<br />

to:<br />

– ship’s turning circle in relation to various<br />

load conditions;<br />

– stopping distances as a function of<br />

engine commands and load conditions;<br />

– capacity of anchor gear.<br />
