Docking manoeuvres<br />

Component 3 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 18 h<br />

getting under way and docking manoeuvres.<br />

Training environment<br />

In the simulator:<br />

• using candidates’ docking plans;<br />

• using scenarios supplied by instructor, including data about ship’s position and factors to be<br />

taken into account.<br />

CONTENT<br />

1. Reviewing general knowledge regarding<br />

types of manoeuvres on the basis of types<br />

of ships, navigating conditions, and<br />

characteristics of wharves and harbour<br />

facilities.<br />

2. Specific regulations at certain wharves.<br />

3. Rules of communication and specific sound<br />

signals.<br />

SUGGESTED METHODS<br />

Instructor<br />

• Check manoeuvring plans developed by<br />

candidates under Component 1 and discuss.<br />

• Conduct a pre-programmed demonstration.<br />

Explain the principles underlying docking<br />

and departure procedures.<br />

• Gradually increase level of difficulty in<br />

programming the simulator.<br />

• Incorporate simulation exercises.<br />

• Analyse completed exercises with<br />

candidates, noting strong points and areas<br />

requiring improvement.<br />

• Alternate simulator exercises with periods<br />

of analysis.<br />

Candidates<br />

• Perform manoeuvre complying as much as<br />

possible with all aspects of plan.<br />
