Candidates<br />
• On the basis of mathematical formulas and<br />
depth under keel:<br />
– calculate squat in a wide shallow<br />
fairway;<br />
– calculate squat in a narrow shallow<br />
fairway;<br />
– assess effects on ship’s behaviour.<br />
• Using technical documentation,<br />
characteristics of the other ships and those<br />
of own ship, anticipate effect of passing<br />
and meeting manoeuvres in fairways.<br />
• On the basis of manoeuvring characteristics<br />
of own ship, assess increased stopping<br />
distance and turning circle as a function<br />
of depth under keel.<br />
• On the basis of ship’s stability tables, data<br />
on cargo, fuel, stores, and other relevant<br />
factors, calculate ship’s centre of gravity so<br />
as to be able to anticipate possibility and<br />
amplitude of list during a sharp turn.<br />
• Using relevant technical documentation,<br />
calculate increase in draught when ship lists<br />
during a rapid change of course.<br />
