Planning Procedures for
the Inspections
3.1 General
Planning of inspections includes all relevant tasks from detennination
of which bridges shall be inspected to the performance of the
inspection. It is assumed that most of tile duties shall be carri ed out
by assistance from the computerised part of the BMS.
The planning phase includes the foll owing:
• Make inspection plans

* Pri nt out inspecti on fonns

Determine necessary inspection too ls
Determine necessary access equipment
Pl an and prepare necessary man force, waming signs, safety
requirements etc.
Examples of inspection tools and access equipment are more thoroughl
y ex plained in chaptcr4. The other items li sted above are
further elaborated in this chapler.
Reference should also be made to chapter 6 "Carrying Out
Inspections" and chapter 7 "Surveys, Materials Tests and
Instru mentation".
For major underwater inspections, it is recommended to carry out
the inspections during the most appropriate season, that means
when the water level is low, the water speed is slow and the sight
in the water is good.

3.2 Inspection Plan
All bridges shall have an inspection pl an in the computerised part
of the BMS, where the fo llowing shall be included:
* Decide whi ch inspections shall be carried out
>I< Detennine and sc hedule the di fferent inspections (programme);
that means detcrmination of date, year and frequencics
>I< Elements to be inspected fo r the different inspection types
>I< Measurements, material investigations and read ing off instru
mentation planned for on eaeh ind ividual inspection, inclusive
extent of the work and exact time schedule
>I< Determination of special damage/elements that need special
attention
>I< Determine required access equipment for the different inspec
tions
