5.3 Degree of Damage Consequence of Damage Degree of Damage The Degree of Damage is used to indicate the seriousness or severity of the damage which depends on the development speed and the rate of severity at the inspection time for each indiv idual damage or group of damage. Four characters indicate di fferent levels of seriousness of a damage as outlined below: Degree of Damage Condition that releases Maintenance Action I : 2: 3: 4: 9: Minor damage or defects that might not require any remedial action within the next 10 years. A verage or slight damage or defects that require remedial action within 4 - 10 years. Serious damage or defects that requ ire remedial ac tion within I - 3 years. Critical damage or defects that require remedial action within 0 - 1/2 year. Not inspected The objective of these characters is to let the inspector indi cate, the seriousness of the damage observed, based on hi s professional judgement, and when they have to be repaired. If the damage may affect the carrying capac ity, thoroughly static calculations may be necessary in order to determine the severity before the degree of damage settles. When the damage affect the maintenance costs severely, and the extent is exten sive, a cost benefit analysis should preferably be carri ed OUI on the bridge before the degree of damage detennines. When inspecting a bridge, the inspector has to detennine if the present condition of the bridge has reached a level where maintenance action is rel evant or not. The way of doing this for the inspector, is as follows: Degree of damage 1 is a state of condition which can be accepted without any recommended action. Degree of damage 2-4 is a state of condition which demand action. The inspector has to detennine if degree o f damage 2, 3 or 4 shall be selected, combin ed with recommended year of action to avoid that the carrying capacity, traffic safety etc. sha ll be affected seriously. Conseqence of Damage The consequences of damage indicate what it will affect if the damage is not repaired in time. Three effects have been considered and are abbreviated by letters as fo llows: C :Damage or defect that affects carrying capacity T:Damage or defect that affects traffic safety M: Damage or defect that affects maintenance cost E: Damage or defect that affects the environment/aesthetics
