APPENDIX-I : DEFINITIONS<br />
Medium: A channel or means of communication. A medium usually allows more than<br />
one form of communication.<br />
Programme: As a superordinate term, it refers to either a certificate, diploma or<br />
degree programme that consists of a few courses (the number of which differs from<br />
programme to programme). Example: MBA programme, BDP programme, PGDDE<br />
programme, etc.<br />
Programmed Learning Material: Refers to the type of self-instructional material<br />
that has been developed on the basis of the principles of the behaviorist learning<br />
theories. The material is presented in small steps, followed by self-tests and immediate<br />
feedback to reinforce learning.<br />
Project Work: The term project work is used to denote an independent piece of<br />
work (guided or unguided) done by a learner to complete a programme of study.<br />
Project work is normally given the weightage of a course 6 credits, i.e., 180 hours of<br />
learner engaged time for study.<br />
Regional Centres: Regional Centres (RCs) are Open University establishments,<br />
representing the open university, in select places. Their functions are to liaise<br />
between the university on the one hand and the students, study centres, the public,<br />
the local educational institutions etc. on the other. The RCs establish, maintain and<br />
monitor the services offered through the study centres, besides assisting the<br />
university in the process of publicity, admission, course delivery and examination.<br />
Regional Services: Besides tutorials and counselling, it includes many more services<br />
such as information services (enquiry), establishment and maintenance of Regional<br />
Centres and/or study centres to help learners get over their difficulties and complete<br />
the courses of their choice successfully.<br />
Self-Instructional Materials: These are the basic and essential components of a<br />
distance education system which enable learners to develop knowledge, skills and<br />
attitudes in specific areas of study according to their own pace and time. These are<br />
specially designed to impart measurable educational outcomes keeping in mind the<br />
target group of learners.
