11 1918 The Australian Joint Stock Bank was amalgamated with the City<br />

Bank of Sydney and became the Australian Bank of Commerce.<br />

This meant it had two branches in Nowra. It was soon looking for<br />

new premises.<br />

19 1932 The vessel "Northern Firth" was lost off Brush Island, south of<br />

Bawley Point. The ship weighed 1,954 tons and was carrying 1,800<br />

tons of general merchandise which the locals pillaged before a guard<br />

could be placed on the cargo. The Captain was McDonald.<br />

9 1984 Osborne Nursing Home (now known as the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Retirement<br />

Village) was opened by Senator Don Grimes - Federal Minister for<br />

Social Security.<br />

FEBRUARY 26<br />

1 1909 Death of Sir John Hay LL.D. of Coolangatta. It was under Sir John's<br />

auspices that the bequest of the late David Berry, of £100,000/-/- for<br />

a hospital for Berry, was fulfilled.<br />

The Government took over control of the hospital in exchange for a<br />

large area of foreshore of Sydney Harbour to the mutual satisfaction<br />

of the Government and people of Sydney and Berry. The hospital<br />

continued to serve not only Berry but the whole of the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong><br />

area for almost half a century before a public hospital was erected in<br />

Nowra.<br />

9 1938 The new ambulance headquarters in Kinghorn Street (the building<br />

now occupied by the South Coast Register), was opened by the<br />
