OCTOBER 4<br />
1 1972 <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> District Hospital took over the preparation of the meals<br />
for the Nowra Meals on Wheels (started in 1969). The distribution<br />
remained the work of voluntary helpers.<br />
OCTOBER 5<br />
16 1883 A two acre site was resumed from David Berry's property for the<br />
purpose of building a vested school at Greenwell Point. It lay idle<br />
for 10 years while increasing pressure was brought on the<br />
Department of Public Instruction to build the school.<br />
17 1911 The Royal Australian Navy officially came into existence. The Navy<br />
and the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> have had a long history together with HMAS<br />
Creswell being opened as the RAN college in 1913 and HMAS<br />
Albatross being the Naval Air Station since 31 August 1948.<br />
OCTOBER 6<br />
1 1937 The newspaper "The <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> News" incorporated "The<br />
<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Telegraph" with Cecil and Ray Rauch as proprietors.<br />
OCTOBER 7<br />
1 1826 John Harper, Wesleyan Missionary to the Aborigines, visited the<br />
Aborigines at Bowen Island at the entrance to Jervis Bay.<br />
1 1955(?) The Nowra High School, bult at a cost of £200,000 was officially<br />
opened with an enrolment of 550 girls and boys.<br />
1 1961 The bush fire station was opened in Illaroo Road, North Nowra (then<br />
known as Bomaderry).<br />
OCTOBER 8<br />
1 1967 Opening of the Aged People's Home, Osborne Street, Nowra, by the<br />
Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler VC.<br />
OCTOBER 9<br />
OCTOBER 10<br />
24 1870 The barque "Summer Cloud" was forced ashore and gave her name<br />
to Summercloud Bay.<br />
