AUGUST 21<br />

1 1859 Laying of the foundation stone for the Anglican Church, Milton, by<br />

John Kendall. Completed in 1880 it was known as St. Paul's Church<br />

and later St. Peter's and Paul's.<br />

1 1975 Official opening of the Tourist Information Centre and Food Sales<br />

Complex on the Princes Highway, Bomaderry.<br />

1 1872 The "<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> News" announced the discovery of gold at Yalwal.<br />

This lead to the boom of Yalwal where by 1889 there were 7 mines<br />

working, a Post office, a Public School with an average attendance<br />

of 40 children and 30 families in residence. Growth continued. In<br />

1890 a sports event drew a crowd of 200. In 1891, 3 stores, a bank<br />

and an hotel were added. However, gradually the gold petered out<br />

and with it, the population of Yalwal. A bush fire spelt its end on 14<br />

January 1939.<br />

1 1918 The Returned Soldiers Convalescent Home was established at<br />

Bomaderry and officially opened by the Governor General of<br />

Australia, Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson on this day. It catered for the<br />

district between Thirroul and Bega and served until September 1920.<br />

1 1944 Formation of the First Bomaderry Boy Scouts Troop.<br />

2 2003 Severe wind storm with gusts up to 160km/hour buffeted the<br />

<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> causing Millions of dollars damage. In addition many<br />

trees came down across power lines causing blackouts lasting days<br />

in some instances. Emergency Services were stretched to the limit.<br />

Emergency power had to be supplied to hospitals and then to dairies<br />

so that the cows could be milked.<br />

Damage to Council’s property alone included<br />

Six shops at 37-43 Kinghorne Street, Nowra – Roof blown off<br />

Nowra School of Arts – Section of roof blown off and remaining<br />

roof damaged<br />

Ken Furness Building (at rear of Nowra School of Arts) –<br />

Western end wall and roof damaged by large tree<br />

Nowra Showground Grandstand – Section of roof blown off<br />

Berry Showground Poultry Pavilion – Demolished by wind<br />

Sporting amenities Lyrebird Park, Nowra – Majority of roof blown<br />

off<br />
