Pastures New". Tickets were 4 shillings and 3 shillings each and the<br />
Society raised sixty one pounds, fifteen shillings and tuppence! The<br />
target was £80,000.<br />
1 1958 The Minister for Health, Hon W F Sheahan MLA, officially opened the<br />
maternity wing of Nowra Hospital - Watson House. The wing and<br />
the nurses home had cost £175,000.<br />
NOVEMBER 30<br />
1 1781 Alexander Berry was born at Cupar, Fifeshire, Scotland. Berry was<br />
to become the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>'s first settler.<br />
1 1875 Laying of the foundation stone for the Roman Catholic Church,<br />
Nowra, by Archbishop Vaughan.<br />
1 1915 The Waratahs "Cooee" recruiting march set off from the Nowra Post<br />
Office. The party of 50 men was cheered off by thousands of<br />
people including 3 soldiers returned wounded from Gallipoli at the<br />
Dardanelles. The party set off to march 10 miles per day to Sydney<br />
whilst the band played "Advance Australia Fair".<br />
1 1956 Currarong had electricity switched on for the first time on this day.<br />
DECEMBER 1<br />
18 1860 The first Post Office in Wandandian was opened and conducted by<br />
Mr Thomas Walsh (Snr). The mail was carried by "post boys" who<br />
came by horseback from Terara dropping mail at the various<br />
settlements of Falls Creek, Jervis Bay, Erowal, Tomerong,<br />
Wandandian, Conjola and Ulladulla (Milton).<br />
1 1962 Councillor Bruce McIntosh of Berry topped the poll and was elected<br />
Shire President unopposed becoming the youngest person to have<br />
held office as Shire President in <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>.<br />

1 1840 Governor, Sir George Gipps, approved the design of the "township of<br />
Huskisson". (William Huskisson, the British Colonial Secretary,<br />
received reports from the then Captain Gipps on slavery and<br />
emancipation in the West Indies. Huskisson distinguished himself by<br />
being run over by a train whilst talking to the Duke of Wellington. He<br />
died from his injuries).<br />
