AUGUST 11<br />
1 1870 Opening of the Wesleyan Chapel at Wood Hill by the Rev Adin<br />
Parsons of Ulladulla.<br />
1 1939 The opening of the new milk and butter factory for the Nowra Cooperative<br />
in the railyards beside the Bomaderry railway station. It<br />
had every modern facility.<br />
AUGUST 12<br />
1 1918 The Far South Coast March to Freedom, which was part of a state<br />
wide rcruiting campaign for men to join the armed forces, reached<br />
Milton.<br />

1 & 26 1879 The original timber bridge across the river at Kangaroo Valley was<br />
opened. At the time it was the highest bridge above water in NSW.<br />
It cost £3,000/-/-. It was washed away by flood on 24th May 1898,<br />
five days after the Hampden Bridge was opened.<br />
18 1886 The "new" school at Wandandian was opened. Students came from<br />
the Walsh, Loadsman, McLean, Condie, Mathie, Clark, Windley,<br />
McTaggett, Parnell, Higgins, Doolans, Oliver, Hancock, Ryan,<br />
Johnston, Glanville and Suffolk families.<br />
9 1914 The <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Branch of the Red Cross League was formed.<br />
Sixty ladies were present at the meeting. Mrs Rodway was the first<br />
president, Miss Emma Bice, secretary and Mrs Hayles was treasurer.<br />
Membership was 1/-. The next morning a street collection raised<br />
£17/7/9 and before the week was out a concert by Mrs Oliver raised<br />
£30/18/-. Mrs Rodway was branch president for 51 of the next 53<br />
years and was awarded the O.B.E. for her services.<br />
1 1918 The far South Coast march to freedom, which was part of a state<br />
wide recruiting campaign for men to join the armed forces, reached<br />
Nowra. They were met by the Mayor of Nowra, Alderman J C<br />
Bennett, the Mayor of South <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>, Alderman W Watts and<br />
others. The marchers were informed that nine waratahs from the<br />
1915 recruiting march (a party of 50 men left Nowra on 30 November<br />
1915), remained in the firing line. (Front Line).<br />
AUGUST 15<br />
7 1888 A special prayer service for rain to break the drought was held by the<br />
Protestant Clergymen in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Nowra.<br />
