5 1974 A male streaker ran down Junction Street, Nowra, during Thursday
night shopping, sparking a rash of similar occurrences during the
week.
MARCH 15
10 1901 Acetylene gas lighting was installed throughout the Albion Hotel (now
the site of the Commonwealth Bank, Nowra) and was first used on
this day for a Municipal dinner. Mr Mark Morton was the Mayor.
The publican was Jonathon Lambert (who may well of been the first
person in Nowra to be convicted on a pollution charge, when he was
fined
£2/-/- for allowing soap suds to flow from his premises to the street in
the November prior).

1 1873 Congretional Sunday School at Milton commenced with 17 scholars.
31 1995 Premier of NSW, John Fahey, launched stage one of the
NSW Jervis Bay National Park. 1000 ha were gazetted of what will
eventually be a 6000 ha park.
MARCH 17
1 1897 Foundation stone of the local Union Church was laid by Miss
Apperley at Worragee (Worrigee).
7 1917 An elephant named Jessie, attached to Wirth's Circus which was
visiting Nowra, decided that she had gone far enough and sat down -
in the middle of the Nowra bridge. All traffic was stopped as the
horses refused to go near the animal. All attempts to move her
failed, including one which was to bring the steam ship "Bermagui"
alongside the bridge and hoist her by means of the ship's crane.
Unfortunately, this attempt came to nought as the ship stuck on a
sand bank. Eventually somebody decided to bring another elephant
and Jessie, seeing her mate, quietly got up and continued her
journey to the station.
1 1957 The opening of the Ulladulla bowling clubhouse and greens was
performed by the President of the Royal Bowling Association of
NSW, Hilton Richardson, in the presence of 300 people.

5 1957 A naval pilot and a midshipman were killed when a Firefly aircraft
from HMAS Albatross crashed at Foxground.
