17 1979 Dissolution of <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Shire Council and Proclamation by the<br />
Governor of NSW, Sir Arthur Roden Cutler, of the Municipality of<br />
<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> as the City of <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>.<br />
Councillor, (then Alderman) Gregory H Watson was appointed<br />
provisional Mayor until September 1980, when he was elected as<br />
<strong>Shoalhaven</strong>’s first Mayor by popular vote.<br />

1 1909 A new Baptist Church was opened on the corner of Berry and<br />
Worrigee Streets, Nowra.<br />
1 1914 Men of the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> District began enlisting for active service with<br />
the declaration of what was to become known as the First World<br />

1 1878 First meeting of the Ulladulla Volunteers. The Ulladulla Volunteer<br />
Rifle Corps was sworn in during September of the same year with 58<br />
in the muster of 75 on the roll.<br />
1 1935 Formation of the Berry Junior Farmers Club.<br />
1 1947 The Nowra District Fishermen's Co-operative was incorporated with J<br />
L Dibbs as Chairman.<br />

1 1840 Sir John Hay LLD of Coolangatta was born. It was under Sir John's<br />
auspices that the bequest of the late David Berry of £100,000 for a<br />
hospital for Berry was fulfilled.<br />
