17 1979 Dissolution of Shoalhaven Shire Council and Proclamation by the
Governor of NSW, Sir Arthur Roden Cutler, of the Municipality of
Shoalhaven as the City of Shoalhaven.
Councillor, (then Alderman) Gregory H Watson was appointed
provisional Mayor until September 1980, when he was elected as
Shoalhaven’s first Mayor by popular vote.

1 1909 A new Baptist Church was opened on the corner of Berry and
Worrigee Streets, Nowra.
1 1914 Men of the Shoalhaven District began enlisting for active service with
the declaration of what was to become known as the First World
War.

1 1878 First meeting of the Ulladulla Volunteers. The Ulladulla Volunteer
Rifle Corps was sworn in during September of the same year with 58
in the muster of 75 on the roll.
1 1935 Formation of the Berry Junior Farmers Club.
1 1947 The Nowra District Fishermen's Co-operative was incorporated with J
L Dibbs as Chairman.

1 1840 Sir John Hay LLD of Coolangatta was born. It was under Sir John's
auspices that the bequest of the late David Berry of £100,000 for a
hospital for Berry was fulfilled.
