DECEMBER 24<br />

1 1868 Great bushfires swept through the Milton District with tradespeople<br />

going out to assist farmers to fight the fires.<br />

19 1968 The breaking of the drought which saw Porters Creek Dam (west of<br />

Milton) filled for the first time. Ironically the Dam was the source of<br />

water for both Ulladulla and Milton, the supply of which had been<br />

"turned on" 14 months earlier.<br />

7 1870 The paddle steamer "The Coolangatta" ran its first tourist excursion<br />

on the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River. Fares were 2/- for adults and 1/- for<br />

children. The Coolangatta left Terara at 7.30am, calling at all wharfs<br />

along the way before reaching Greenwell point at 10.00am. The<br />

first leg of the excursion was to Picnic Bay, Crookhaven Heads<br />

where the picnicers enjoyed themselves until 6.00pm. The return<br />

journey featured singing and dancing before Terara came into view<br />

at 8.30pm.<br />

7 1888 The Bowral cricket team visited Nowra for a game of cricket. Nowra<br />

scored 343. The visitors from the Highlands were bundled out for<br />

20.<br />

DECEMBER 27<br />

19 1828 Surveyor Hoddle commenced a survey from his camp at Croobyar<br />

and moved down Narrawallee Creek until he joined Surveyor<br />

Florance's survey a little more than half a mile (800m) below the<br />

present bridge on the main Nowra Road.<br />

7 1870 The paddle steamer "The Coolangatta", took tourists on a day<br />

excursion to Broughton Creek.<br />

DECEMBER 28<br />

9 & 13 1906 Enactment of the David Berry Hospital Act. Under this Act, the<br />

hospital land and other large areas at North Sydney owned by the<br />

Estate of David Berry were given to the Government in exchange for<br />

the building and maintenance of the David Berry Hospital.<br />
