MARCH 24<br />
4 1818 Captain Throsby wrote of entering "a large plain of flat forest called<br />
by the natives Tallawa, from whence we saw the deep ravines<br />
running to Shoals Haven".<br />
26 1903 The Kangaroo Valley Times reported that John Irvine of Wattamolla<br />
had been charged with possessing a still. This was for the<br />
manufacture of the famous Kangaroo Valley "Moonshine" or<br />
"Mountain Dew". Over 490 lbs of sugar had been used over a 3<br />
week period. Irvine was fined £100/-/-. This was supposed to act<br />
as a deterrent but "moonshiners" were still being caught as late as<br />
1930 in Kangaroo Valley.<br />
9 1931 The <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> District Ambulance Committee was formed (initiated<br />
by the Nowra Country Women's Association) for the purpose of<br />
raising funds to purchase a vehicle to replace the horse-drawn<br />
ambulance which had been in service since 1912.<br />
9 1979 Osborne House, accommodation for the aged, was opened by<br />
Federal Health Minister, Mr Ralph Hunt.<br />
MARCH 25<br />
16 1942 A meeting was held to appoint new trustees for the Greenwell Point<br />
Union Church.<br />
MARCH 26<br />
23 1889 Ulladulla School was closed because of the teacher's (Mr W Evans)<br />
illness, first diagnosed as rheumatism then later as typhoid fever.<br />
He died on 6 May 1889.<br />
1 1962 Councillor F P Ryan, the Shire President of the first council elected<br />
since the term of office of the Administrator, K G H Hawskaw, was<br />
forced to step down as Shire President, due to ill health. Councillor<br />
R A Bishop was elected to succeed him. Clr. Ryan died on 20th<br />
May, 1962 whilst still in office.<br />
16 1966 The Greenwell Point Swimming Pool was officially opened.<br />
2 1984 Public ceremony on the Gold Coast, Queensland to “Decree and<br />
Seal” an agreement between <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> City Council and Gold<br />
Coast City Council that the town of Coolangatta, New South Wales<br />
and the town of Coolangatta Queensland “....... be recognised as<br />
towns with an especial historical link and bond of friendship”<br />
MARCH 27<br />
1 1812 Surveyor George William Evans reached Jervis Bay aboard "Lady<br />
Nelson".<br />
