MAY 30<br />

9 1949 A public meeting was held in the Nowra School of Arts to protest the<br />

delays in starting the construction of a <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> district hospital.<br />

1 1970 Bomaderry High School was opened by the Premier of NSW, Hon. R<br />

W Ashin.<br />

MAY 31<br />

19 1828 Surveyor Thomas Florance reached Murramarang. The area now<br />

known as Murramarang Island he mentioned as Mit Island.<br />

1 1936 The Roman Catholic Church of St. Patrick, Berry, was blessed and<br />

opened by Monsignor King. It was built of red brick and had gothic<br />

windows and doors, the former being of amber glass.<br />

JUNE 1<br />

7 1870 The Paddle Steamer "The Coolangatta" was refloated in the<br />

<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River after it had been washed 75 yards inland by the<br />

floods of April 23rd-26th of the same year. She was released into<br />

the river at 9pm. The scene was lit by bonfires and tar barrels and<br />

was witnessed by a large crowd including scores of small boys.<br />

The Coolangatta was recorded as the first tourist vessel to operate<br />

on the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River taking holiday excursions over the<br />

Christmas/New Year period of the same year. Fares for the day trip<br />

were 2 shillings for adults, children half price.<br />

1 1951 The New South Wales Hospital Commission took a lease of Edman<br />

Hospital as a maternity annexe.<br />

15 1981 2.00am and the Lady Denman starts her second attempt to leave<br />

Sydney Harbour under tow from the M.V. Hollandia. The departure<br />

was "most clandestine" in nature as no official approval had been<br />

given for the Lady Denman to leave. All went well at first but then<br />

the weather turned nasty. The wind rose to 25 knots and the swell<br />

to 3 metres. There were times when "the Lady" and her tow were in<br />

two different troughs and out of sight of each other. By 9.00pm the<br />

Navy was asked to help. HMAS Tobruk took up station to windward<br />

to give protection from the wind and a helicopter hovered overhead.<br />

They finally made it to the naval dock at HMAS Creswell.<br />

JUNE 2<br />

1 1893 The opening of the railway from north Kiama (now Bombo) to<br />

<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> by the Governor, Sir Robert Duff, who travelled on the<br />

first train as it drew into Bomaderry. One of the enterage, Railway<br />
