1 1972 Officers and ratings of H.M.A.S. Albatross and H.M.A.S. Creswell<br />
were granted freedom of Entry to the Shire of <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>. This<br />
was conferred by Clr. J E Hatton, Shire President.<br />
SEPTEMBER 22<br />
1 1859 Proclamation of the Municipality of <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>. This followed an<br />
Act of Parliament in October 1858 and a petition of 103 "locals".<br />
This proclamation was strongly opposed by Alexander Berry (who<br />
would have been the principal ratepayer). Much legal wrangling<br />
took place with the proclamation eventually being thrown out by the<br />
Privy Council due to weaknesses in the original Act of Parliament.<br />
The Mayor and Aldermen had to pay costs which were met by public<br />
subscription in August 1865.<br />
11 1879 The Government Savings Bank established an agency in the Nowra<br />
Post Office. Jeremiah Green was postmaster.<br />
17 1951 The foundation stone of the school and church of St. Michael and all<br />
Angels at Burrill Lake was laid by the Most Rev. H W K Mowll.<br />

1 1970 The Tourist Association changed its title to the Kiama/<strong>Shoalhaven</strong><br />
Regional Tourist Association.<br />

1 1947 The Milton branch of the Country Womens Association was<br />
inaugurated on this day. The meeting was attended by 50 ladies.<br />
Mrs A L Kendall was elected president, Mrs K W Kendall, secretary<br />
and Mrs M Thistleton, treasurer.<br />
SEPTEMBER 27<br />
13 1873 (Conflicting report - refer September 17 - Alexander Berry died, aged<br />
91. He left the whole of his estate to his younger brother David (then<br />
aged 77)).<br />
7 1878 The Department of Public Works inserted an advertisement in the<br />
Government Gazette calling for tenders for the construction of an<br />
iron bridge over the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River at Nowra.<br />
