5 1822 Scotsman Alexander Berry arrived at Coolangatta to become first<br />

white settler in the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> District. His vessel was the 15 ton<br />

cutter "Blanche".<br />

1 1822 Two of the crew of Berry's settlement party (Davidson and one other)<br />

were drowned trying to enter the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River.<br />

JUNE 22<br />

2 1994 The Italian rugby team played Country NSW at the<br />

<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Rugby Park, Rugby Road, Nowra. Italy won.<br />

JUNE 23<br />

1 1822 Alexander Berry noted in his diary "<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Hill, Cullingatty"<br />

which was later to be known as "Mount Coolangatta" - meaning<br />

splendid view, fine view or good lookout.<br />

13 1972 (Conflicting report of the re-opening of Coolangatta Historic Village -<br />

see June 24).<br />

JUNE 24<br />

19 1948 Last meeting of the Ulladulla Municipal Council prior to its<br />

amalgamation into <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Shire.<br />

1 1972 Coolangatta Historic Village Motel was opened by the Hon. T. L.<br />

Lewis, MLA. The restoration of the village had been undertaken by<br />

Mr and Mrs Colin Bishop. This was the sesquicentenary of the<br />

settlement of Coolangatta.<br />

JUNE 25<br />

1 1822 Hamilton Hume and three men were left by Alexander Berry on an<br />

isthmus to build a hut and cut a passage (across the sandspit).<br />

1 1865 The S.S. Coolangatta (second vessel of that name), a flat bottom<br />

boat built for the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company, was launched<br />

at Darling Harbour. She was used to receive dairy produce from<br />

Broughton Creek (Berry), the back districts and Kangaroo Valley.<br />

1 1877 Opening of the original Telegraph Office, Broughton Creek (now<br />

Berry).<br />

1 1888 Opening of the Anglican Church at "The Falls" now known as Falls<br />

Creek.<br />
