1 & 36 1958 The Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay, was commissioned<br />
as HMAS Creswell under Captain W J Dovers. The RANC had just<br />
returned from were it had been located at the Flinders Naval Depot<br />
from the 11 th August 1930. The name Creswell comes from Admiral<br />
Sir William Creswell, one of the founders of the RAN.<br />
JANUARY 21<br />
3 1941 Serviceman Ray Hollands (NX7877) was killed in action at Tobruk in<br />
the Middle East during World War II. Hollands Road, Nowra, was<br />
named after him.<br />
JANUARY 22<br />
13 1869 James Wilson, local businessman, was elected first Mayor of the<br />
Municipality of Berry.<br />
13 1878 The Presbytery of Illawarra met to discuss a petition signed by 88<br />
heads of families from the Broughton Creek district. The Presbytery<br />
declared Broughton Creek a separate charge.<br />
1 1900 Banking facilities were introduced at the Post Office at Yalwal.<br />

1 1863 "The Pluto" began dredging the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River between the punt<br />
crossing at Bomaderry and Appletree Island (Greenwell Point). It<br />
kept to the task for 10 years.<br />

2 1995 Arthur Boyd, <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>'s and Australia's most famous artist, was<br />
named Australian of the Year. Arthur Boyd gave Bundanon, his<br />
property on the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River, to the nation of Australia as a<br />
living Art Centre. The property, that of his brother-in-law, Sir Sydney<br />
Nolan, the buildings and all the collected art works from the Boyd<br />
family are valued at about $8.5 million. The announcement was<br />
made at 8:00 PM for publication on the next day - Australia Day.<br />
JANUARY 26<br />
26 1872 The first service was held in the Anglican Church, the Church of the<br />
Good Shepherd, Kangaroo Valley.<br />
