MAY 24<br />
1 1884 This day, being Queen Victoria's birthday, F T Humphrey, MLA for<br />
<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> laid the foundation stone for the Anglican Church of St.<br />
Luke, Broughton Creek (later re-named Berry).<br />
1 1888 Bridge on the main road over Broughton Mill Creek was opened.<br />
Cost was £1,856/-/-.<br />
26 1898 The old bridge across Kangaroo River was washed away by flood.<br />
This was five days after the new Hampden Bridge was opened.<br />
1 & 13 1905 Empire Day. Laying of the foundation stone for the Berry School of<br />
Arts by Alexander Hay.<br />
1 1927 Empire Day. The Port Kembla, Kiama, Nowra electric light scheme<br />
reached Berry and was switched on.<br />
1 1935 Charles A Branch took over the printing and publishing of "The South<br />
Coast Register" for the proprietor, Sidney Ford.<br />

16 1897 A special meeting of the directors of the Berry Central Butter Factory<br />
decided to build toilets for the two workers cottages. Material for<br />
each was to cost £1/-/- (the rent on the cottage for the engineer was<br />
6 shillings and 6 pence per week).<br />

31 1994 NSW Cabinet meet in Nowra at the City Administrative Centre<br />
(Council Chambers)<br />
35 1994 The first of the new Endeavour trains arrived at Bomaderry Station.<br />
The Minister for Roads and Transport, Mr Bruce Baird arrived on<br />
board the train.<br />
31 1994 The Premier of NSW, Mr John Fahey and the Minister for Agriculture<br />
and Fisheries, Mr Ian Causley announced plans for a Marine<br />
Reserve in Jervis Bay.<br />
MAY 28<br />
1 1934 Nowra Municipal Council adopted as its crest the male lyre bird<br />
design subsequently used by the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Shire Council. It was<br />
presented by M F Morton, MLA for Wollondilly, having been designed<br />
by Hon. John Lane Mullins, MA, Member of the Legislative Council of<br />
NSW. It carried the motto "Uber Et Saluber" meaning fruitful and<br />
healthful (or fruitful and bountiful).<br />
