JULY 3<br />
19 1849 The Schooner "Susan" of 23 tons and carrying tallow and hides<br />
struck Ulladulla reef. She went down in 10 minutes.<br />
JULY 4<br />
1 1822 Alexander Berry decided that his station would be built on the southeastern<br />
foot of Mount Coolangatta.<br />
9 1959 The <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Branch of the Red Cross opened its offices in<br />
Stewart Place. Shire Administrator, Keith Hawkshaw performed the<br />
duties.<br />
JULY 5<br />
7 1879 Work began on the construction of the iron bridge over the<br />
<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River at Nowra.<br />
JULY 6<br />
1 1873 A Wesleyan Sunday School was opened in "The Old School House",<br />
Broughton Creek (now Berry).<br />
1 1935 the Nowra aerodrome was opened at Nowra Hill with an air pageant<br />
but no permanent air service developed on a commercial scale.<br />
JULY 7<br />
1 1822 Completion of Berry's canal. It took Hamilton Hume and three men<br />
twelve days to complete the 209 yard long canal. It was Australia's<br />
first canal. No Environmental Impact Study was required. The river<br />
itself cut the canal wider and deeper and dredging many years later<br />
opened up the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> River for steamships and the coastal<br />
trade.<br />
1 1951 The timber built, Methodist Church Hall, Bomaderry was opened by<br />
Rev. Claude Connor.<br />
