AUGUST 30
1 1831 Surveyor Mitchell wrote to the Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay
noting that "The Kangaroo Ground" (now Kangaroo Valley) enclosed
much valuable land.
1 1952 The Anglican Church at Lake Burrill was opened by Most Reverend
H W K Mowll, Archbishop of Sydney.
1 1969 The Seventh Day Adventist Church building was opened in McKay
Street, Nowra.
16 1974 The Greenwell Point Bowling and Sports Club finally received its
licence after two court appearances.
AUGUST 31
13 1889 David Berry gave an acre of land to the NSW Government for a court
house in Broughton Creek (Berry).
17 1948 The Royal Australian navy commissioned H.M.A.S. Albatross as the
Naval Air Station.
1 1948 The White Ensign Club was established for Navy personnel from
H.M.A.S. Albatross.
1 1963 The Ulladulla-Milton Lions Club, with Sylvester Robinson as
president, received its charter.
1995 The Premier of NSW, the Hon Bob Carr, MP, presented Shoalhaven
City Council, as joint winner with Belligen Shire Council, with the
prestigious Dorothy Helmrich Award in recognition of Council’s
significant cultural developments with particular reference to town
design / townscape improvements, visual/public arts, crafts, design,
literature, performing arts, festivals, capital works and youth arts.
SEPTEMBER 1
1 1855 Rev. Proctor (Church of England) became the first Minister of the
Parish with services being conducted at the home of Mrs de Mestre,
(Numbaa).
16 1870 The Council of Education granted aid for the establishment of a
provisional school at Greenwell Point.
11 1872 The Government Savings Bank opened a branch at Terara.
1 1894 News items report that Police were searching the mountains around
Kangaroo Valley for illicit whisky stills.
1 1924 Formation of the Nowra Branch of the Country Womens Association
with Mrs M P Morton as its first President.
