AUGUST 30<br />
1 1831 Surveyor Mitchell wrote to the Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay<br />
noting that "The Kangaroo Ground" (now Kangaroo Valley) enclosed<br />
much valuable land.<br />
1 1952 The Anglican Church at Lake Burrill was opened by Most Reverend<br />
H W K Mowll, Archbishop of Sydney.<br />
1 1969 The Seventh Day Adventist Church building was opened in McKay<br />
Street, Nowra.<br />
16 1974 The Greenwell Point Bowling and Sports Club finally received its<br />
licence after two court appearances.<br />
AUGUST 31<br />
13 1889 David Berry gave an acre of land to the NSW Government for a court<br />
house in Broughton Creek (Berry).<br />
17 1948 The Royal Australian navy commissioned H.M.A.S. Albatross as the<br />
Naval Air Station.<br />
1 1948 The White Ensign Club was established for Navy personnel from<br />
H.M.A.S. Albatross.<br />
1 1963 The Ulladulla-Milton Lions Club, with Sylvester Robinson as<br />
president, received its charter.<br />
1995 The Premier of NSW, the Hon Bob Carr, MP, presented <strong>Shoalhaven</strong><br />
City Council, as joint winner with Belligen Shire Council, with the<br />
prestigious Dorothy Helmrich Award in recognition of Council’s<br />
significant cultural developments with particular reference to town<br />
design / townscape improvements, visual/public arts, crafts, design,<br />
literature, performing arts, festivals, capital works and youth arts.<br />
SEPTEMBER 1<br />
1 1855 Rev. Proctor (Church of England) became the first Minister of the<br />
Parish with services being conducted at the home of Mrs de Mestre,<br />
(Numbaa).<br />
16 1870 The Council of Education granted aid for the establishment of a<br />
provisional school at Greenwell Point.<br />
11 1872 The Government Savings Bank opened a branch at Terara.<br />
1 1894 News items report that Police were searching the mountains around<br />
Kangaroo Valley for illicit whisky stills.<br />
1 1924 Formation of the Nowra Branch of the Country Womens Association<br />
with Mrs M P Morton as its first President.<br />
