1 1836 James Backhouse and party discovered the northern end of Seven
Mile Beach.
SEPTEMBER 29
1 1877 Opening of the Roman Catholic Church, Nowra, by Archbishop
Vaughan. It was built by A McArthur and estimated to cost £1,200/-
/-.
16 1978 Rosbery Spray Pty Ltd decentralised to Greenwell Point. Work
commenced 4 days later with 10 new local employees plus 4 who
transferred from Sydney.
SEPTEMBER 30
1 1955 Opening of the Public Hall at Shoalhaven Heads by Councillor P S
West, President of Shoalhaven Shire Council.
11 1982 The Bank of New South Wales merged with the Commercial Bank of
Australia Ltd to become the Westpac Banking Corporation. This left
the Westpac Bank with two offices in Nowra until it moved to its new
premises in Junction Street in November 1987.
OCTOBER 1
1 1861 Opening of the original post office in Broughton Creek (now Berry).
OCTOBER 2
23 1913 The first fleet of the Royal Australian Navy comprising the flagship
H.M.A.S. Australia and her sister ships Sydney, Melbourne,
Encounter, Psyche, Cambrian, Parramatta, Yarra and Warrego
arrived in Jervis Bay to clean up and prepare for an official arrival at
Port Jackson on October 4.
OCTOBER 3
1 1891 Laying of the foundation staone for the Mechanics Institute and
School of Arts building in Berry Street, Nowra. The stone was laid
by the Minister for works Hon. J H Young, MLA, even though the
stone is engraved "laid by Sir Henry Parkes". The later was
prevented from completing the task through the illness of an aged
sister. School children sang the new song "Advance Australia Fair".
