1 1836 James Backhouse and party discovered the northern end of Seven<br />

Mile Beach.<br />

1 1877 Opening of the Roman Catholic Church, Nowra, by Archbishop<br />

Vaughan. It was built by A McArthur and estimated to cost £1,200/-<br />

/-.<br />

16 1978 Rosbery Spray Pty Ltd decentralised to Greenwell Point. Work<br />

commenced 4 days later with 10 new local employees plus 4 who<br />

transferred from Sydney.<br />

SEPTEMBER 30<br />

1 1955 Opening of the Public Hall at <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Heads by Councillor P S<br />

West, President of <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Shire Council.<br />

11 1982 The Bank of New South Wales merged with the Commercial Bank of<br />

Australia Ltd to become the Westpac Banking Corporation. This left<br />

the Westpac Bank with two offices in Nowra until it moved to its new<br />

premises in Junction Street in November 1987.<br />

1 1861 Opening of the original post office in Broughton Creek (now Berry).<br />

OCTOBER 2<br />

23 1913 The first fleet of the Royal Australian Navy comprising the flagship<br />

H.M.A.S. Australia and her sister ships Sydney, Melbourne,<br />

Encounter, Psyche, Cambrian, Parramatta, Yarra and Warrego<br />

arrived in Jervis Bay to clean up and prepare for an official arrival at<br />

Port Jackson on October 4.<br />

OCTOBER 3<br />

1 1891 Laying of the foundation staone for the Mechanics Institute and<br />

School of Arts building in Berry Street, Nowra. The stone was laid<br />

by the Minister for works Hon. J H Young, MLA, even though the<br />

stone is engraved "laid by Sir Henry Parkes". The later was<br />

prevented from completing the task through the illness of an aged<br />

sister. School children sang the new song "Advance Australia Fair".<br />
