Australia. In 1898 Dr. Hay expressed concern about the inroads<br />
margarine was making into the butter industry. At that time 1,075<br />
tons of butter were produced annually in the Berry District from<br />
12,800 estate cows.<br />
SEPTEMBER 8<br />
1 1962 The Berry Baby Health Centre, sponsored by the Country Womens<br />
Association, was opened by Dr. Maureen Gratton-Smith, Deputy<br />
Director of Maternal and Baby Welfare of the Department of Public<br />
Health. It cost £4,500.<br />
SEPTEMBER 9<br />
1 1961 Opening of the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Shire Council Chambers in Junction<br />
Street, Nowra, by the Minister for Local Government, Hon. P D Hills,<br />
M.L.A. The original estimate for costs had been £104,165 but costs<br />
of land, resumptions and furnishings brought the total to £188,000.<br />
SEPTEMBER 10<br />
1 1888 A meeting of farmers decided to form "The Broughton Valley Dairy<br />
Co Ltd". The factory opened in 1889.<br />
SEPTEMBER 11<br />
1 1876 The steamer "Dandenong" was wrecked north of Bendalong with a<br />
loss of 40 lives, only 5 being saved.<br />
11 1893 The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney closed its Terara<br />
Branch and transferred all its business to Nowra.<br />
SEPTEMBER 12<br />
1 1927 Electricity for the town of Bomaderry was switched on by Mrs<br />
McGuire, wife of Alderman A F McGuire of Bomaderry with a golden<br />
key.<br />
(This conflicts with another report which says electricity was turned<br />
on by H J Bate, M.L.A. on 14 May 1938).<br />
31 1998 <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>’s Lori Munz as a member of the Australian Womens 4 x<br />
200 m freestyle relay team wins Gold at the Commonwealth Games<br />
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team was Lori Munz, Julia Greville,<br />
Susie O’Neill and Anna Windsor. Lori swam the third leg. They set a<br />
new Commonwealth Games and Australian record of 8.03.73<br />
