AUGUST 16<br />

4 1893 Bomaderry was officially named with the re-opening of the Post<br />

Office (previously known as Bundbaderra - aboriginal for fighting<br />

ground, and previously spelt Bomadary).<br />

1 1912 The foundation stone for the new Berry Council Chambers was laid<br />

by the Minister for Lands, Hon. G S Beeby, MLA, in Hazelberry Park.<br />

1 1934 Formation of the Kangaroo Valley Junior Farmers Club.<br />

AUGUST 18<br />

1 1788 Lt. Richard Bowen in the vessel "Atlantic" entered a bay which he<br />

named "Port Jervis" in honour of Sir John Jervis.<br />

1 & 7 1846 The brigantine "The Coolangatta", named by Alexander Berry after<br />

his station which in turn was named after Mount Coolangatta, was<br />

wrecked in a storm. The place was between Point Danger, where<br />

the boundary between NSW and Queensland was made in 1859,<br />

and Cut Hill. The place was called Coolangatta after the wreck of<br />

the ship.<br />

In 1925 it was exposed by another storm. The old wreck was located<br />

by rutile miners, 30 feet below sand level, in 1954. In 1973 the<br />

Queensland Government tried to blow it up as it was proving a<br />

hazard to shipping and surfers - unsuccessfully. On 22 March 1974,<br />

another cyclone dumped it high on the beach and souvenir hunters<br />

quickly removed what the sea and the Government had been unable<br />

to destroy in 127 years.<br />

1 1872 The congretional Church at Milton was opened by the Rev. John<br />

Graham. The Church was built by contractors Poole and Moore for<br />

£557/-/-.<br />

2 1995 The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Paul Keating visited Bundanon,<br />

on the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> river and presented Arthur<br />

Boyd, <strong>Shoalhaven</strong>'s and Australia's most famous artist, his<br />

award as Australian of the year for 1995.<br />
