COUNCIL BLUFFS. IOWA—The Midlands
4 theatres, located in the Midlands
Mall, bowed March 23 as Irwin Dubinsky,
president of Dubinsky Bros. Theatres, and
his family greeted VIPs attending the invitational
grand opening of the quadplex.
Guests celebrated at Club 64 with cocktails
and dinner before a brisk, pleasant drive to
the shopping center, which is situated in
downtown Council Bluffs. The motion picture
offering of the evening was the Oscarwinning
(Best Picture) United Artists release
"Rocky," starring Sylvester Stallone.
Employees of the mall were special guests
at the Midlands 4 Thursday, March 24,
with the official public grand opening celebrated
the following day.
Dick Rohm, manager of the new theatres,
directed his staff's execution of duties in
fine fashion. Guests wandered through the
various auditoriums before the "Rocky"
showing, with the projection booth a favorite
spot for inspection. Boothman Don Kerlin
explained the use of the double mirror
projection system, elaborating at length on
how it could provide a clear, concise picture.
The Midlands 4 theatres are,
for Council
Bluffs, a return to first-run cinematic entertainment.
Sarge Dubinsky, vice-president
of the circuit, explained: "Downtown Omaha
no longer is the main draw it once was
for moviegoers. Now many of the theatres
have gone west—to west Omaha. For Council
Bluffs citizens, that's quite a drive. Now
they have their own alternative."
Premier film attractions for the public
unveiling of the quad were "Rocky," "A
Star Is Born." "The Shaggy D.A." and
"SuperVan." Booked to open on its national
release day was "Black Sunday." And it has
been satisfying to note that, since the debut
of the four-screen situation, patrons have
supplied a vote of confidence and a hearty
welcome to the Midlands 4.
'Edge' Benefit Showing
OMAHA—A screening of "The Edge,"
a film about dangerous and spectacular
sports, was held as a benefit recently at the
Q Cinema 4 Theatre. Sponsored by the
showing were contributed to the Nebraska
chapter of the National Foundation for
Sudden Infant Death.
Douglas Potash, branch manager here for
United Artists, hosted a special tradeshowing
of "Audrey Rose" at
the Centre screening
room March 23. The preview audience
clearly was favorably impressed. Novelist
Mary Leader of Mequon, whose tale of the
supernatural, "Triad," has been a best seller
(and is still waiting to be screened), declared
"Audrey Rose" to be one of the best
films in years. "It's a loving story with
loving people," another viewer said. The
PG-rated motion picture was slated to open
