Col. Signs Paul Schrader
For Five Film Projects
BURBANK— Daniel Melnick. in charge
of worldwide production for Columbia Piehires,
announced thai he baa concluded a
multiple-picture agreement with Paul
Schrader, writer ol the screenplay for
"Taxi Driver."
The pact calls tor Schradcr's involvement
in five film projects, beginning with his
original screenplay '"Hard Core." which he
also will direct. John Milius will produce
the film, scheduled to begin production
later this year.
Attenborough Will Direct
'Magic' for Joseph Levine
NEW YORK—Joseph E. Levine announced
that Sir Richard Attenborough will
direct the motion picture version of William
Goldman's best-selling novel "Magic."
Attenborough has just completed editing
"A Bridge Too Far." Levine's mammoth
movie based on the Cornelius Ryan best
seller.
"Magic" will start production October 3
and it will be produced by Joseph E. Levine
and Richard I'. Levine, thus re-uniting the
same team that
made "A Bridge Too Far."
which is scheduled for worldwide release
June 15.
Goldman, winner of this year's Academy
Ward lor his screenplay of "All The President's
men." scripted "Magic." based on
his book.
'Star Is Born' Sets New
Mark at London Cinema

The picture set a new house record
of $29,780 (I'.S.) at the 890-seat Warner
West End 2 and $17,336 (U.S.) at
the 616-seat ABC 1 Theatre in Shaftesbury
Avenue.
The previous record at the Warner
West End 2—$29,219—was set in
1972 by "A Clockwork Orange."
"A Star Is Born" is a First Arlists-

Variety Int'l Will Handle
'Legend of Frank Woods'
HOLLYWOOD—Newly formed Variety
International Pictures, headed by film sales
veteran Ward Pennington, will handle release
of Deno Paoli's newest motion picture,
"The Legend of Frank Woods," set to
open in 16 locations in Houston, Tex., May
13.
The film stars Troy Donahue, Brad
Stewart and Kitty Vallacher. Paoli's earlier
hit was "Santee," starring Glenn Ford.
Pennington formerly was vice-president
of sales for Atlas Films.

Cinerama's 1976 net earnings amounted
to $561,000, equal to 20 cents per share
(including an extraordinary gain ol $260,000
or nine cents per sharei. compared with a
net loss of S2.990.000 oi SI. 30 per share
for the prior year.
Revenues declined to $56,477,000 in
1975, due primarily to a decrease in film
rentals and theatre revenues. Hotel revenues,
however, continued to increase.
The improvement in the results lor 1976
was derived primarily from substantial increases
in hotel earnings and gains on sales
of theatre properties (which gains equaled
55 cents per share in 1976 vs. six cents per
share for 1975) ami substantially reduced
losses from its film distribution activities.
Location Filming Starts
On WB Xmas Release
BURBANK, CALIF.—Filming started
Monday (4) on "Gauntlet." Warner Bros.'
Christmas release, with Clint Eastwood
starring and directing. Sondra Locke has
the feminine lead in the Malpaso production.
Location filming calls for camera work
both in Arizona and Nevada.
