death of Nunnally Johnson. 79. motion picture
producer and author who began his
writing career as a newspaperman in his
Dative Columbus, Ga. He wrote short stories
for the old Saturday Evening Post and
other magazines then moved to Hollywood
where he wrote and produced many famous
films including "Grapes of Wrath," "Tobacco
Road." "Desert Fox," "Three Faces
of Eve," "The Dirty Dozen" and others.
NITE and SITE notes: NITE membership
continues to grow with 12 affiliate organizations.
Of these 12. four also are affiliated
with NATO and four are regional
NITE units, each made up of several state
units. More than 5,000 theatres, located in
46 states, are represented, a strength sizable
enough to be reckoned with in the industry
. . . The annual SITE convention has been
put back to October 25-26 so as not to conflict
with the tri-state NATO meeting . . .
Several members of the NITE national
board of advisors will go to the West Coast
Tuesday (26) to meet with members of the
filmmaking community for discussions and
suggestions relative to the proposed film
financing program . . . NORITE (Northern
Independent Theatres Exhibitors Ass'n) met
Thursday (7) at the Viking Motor Inn in
Pittsburgh. Ed Jones, president, recently
filed a law suit challenging the disparity in
house allowances in his theatres as compared
to large circuit theatres operating in
the area.
WOMPI notes: The local chapter is handling
registrations for the tri-state Southeastern
NATO convention April 20-22.
Nell Castleberry, industry service chairperson,
is registration coordinator . . . The
April WOMPI meeting was held Thursday
(7). Members ate at Morrison's Cafeteria
and then met in the Community Room in
the First Georgia Bank Building . . . The
club will donate a wheelchair to the Easter
Seal Society with the presentation taking
place during the May meeting. Members
have agreed to make their annual donation
to the American Cancer Society . . .
