£*haries Chaplin, head of the studios at
Weinberg, claims thai the C\iC refuses
to use these facilities, due to the fact that
they are outside the city and for this reason
the I A I SI" demands extra pay for travel
time. Chaplin also said. "Kleinberg has lost
business because the local technicians are
not up to the standards of Hollywood." The
feature film "Equus" was made here recently
and Chaplin claims that carpentry which
should have been done in two weeks took
4': weeks to complete.
Richard Williams, locally born film animator,
at present is back in his home city
teaching a course in total animation to a
small class at the Ontario College of Art.
Williams created the Pink Panther and his
full-length feature "Raggedy Ann & Andy"
has just gone into general release.
Pare Lorentz, pioneer documentarian,
has been a visitor in this city at the invitation
of Gerald Pratley, director of the Ontario
Film Theatre. Some of his early films
were shown here, introduced by Lorentz
Tent 28 Bike-A-Thon
Plans Are Outlined
TORONTO—Nine-year-old Henry An-
was named "1976 Bike-A-Thon Rider
tolio
of the Year" at the annual Wild Irish
Luncheon held by the Variety Club of Ontario
Tent 28 Thursday, March 17, at the
Royal York Hotel here. Henry, who is
handicapped by cerebral palsy, pedaled his
specially made bicycle three miles, using
his hands, to earn $27 for Variety—and he
hopes to do more this year.
"We all must do more this year," said
Bob Lester, chief barker, at the luncheon.
"Our first four Bike-A-Thons raised $680,-
000. This year our target is at least $320,-
000, so that we can chalk up our first
$1,000,000 for all the children's charities
affiliated with the club."
Lester said that, although the vocational
school aspect of Variety Village in Scarborough
was being phased out, the village's
research, development and production cen-
Kathleen Stokes, once known as "Canada's
Sweetheart of the Theatre Organ,"
was honored March 22 on the occasion of
her 83rd birthday. The event took place at
this city's wondrous castle-on-the-hill, Casa
Loma, where the massive 1,200-pipe Wurlitzer
organ from the Shea's Hippodrome
(razed several years ago to make room for
the new city hall) has been rebuilt and
restored by the Toronto Theatre Organ
Society. Kay, as Kathleen is generally
known, once played in every major vaudeville
and silent movie house in our town
and the society has elected her to its Organists'
Hall of Fame. She still "practices"
for an hour each day on the theatre organ
installed in her home.
ter for electronic limbs will undergo costly
expansion.
Variety Village also will be expanded
soon, Lester said, to care for children suffering
from brain damage. Included in
plans is a day-care center and parent-relief
program which would enable mothers and
fathers to leave severely disabled children
in
the care of professionals.
"But all these things depend on the success
of our upcoming Bike-A-Thon," Lester
stated. "We urge riders to get their sponsorship
forms earlier this year. We have
printed 1,000.000 of them and they are
available now in schools, theatres, libraries,
police stations, banks, plazas, etc."
There will be seven official Bike-A-Thon
courses stretched out across the metropolitan
Toronto area.
Association Is Formed
By Women Filmmakers
MONTREAL—An association has been
formed here by freelance and independent
filmmakers, it was announced recently. Believed
to be the first organization of its kind
in Canada, the filmmakers' association reportedly
will attempt to represent its founders'
interests in the film industry. Members
especially believe that they will be able to
depend on the group's leaders to "fight for
equal job opportunities for women in the
Canadian film industry and to create more
chances for women to make films on their
own."
Bonnie Klein, 35-year-old freelance filmmaker,
told Canadian Press, "Filmmaking
and trying to stay independent from the
normal resource channels in a city that's not
the center of English film in Canada is a
lonely endeavor. Potentially, our group
could get together and cry on each others'
shoulders but, as it has developed, it has
become a means of sharing ideas, providing
positive reinforcement and a way to find out
about jobs for each other."
Ms. Klein pointed out that independent
and freelance filmmaking can be a costly
and frustrating experience, "since individual
filmmakers must hustle funds for themselves."
Previously, this segment of the filmmaking
community has turned to the National
Film Board or the Canada Council for
funds. However, with recent budget cutbacks,
such filmmakers have been forced
to dip into their own pockets or drop their
projects.
