4. NARRATOR: It is early morning in the small <strong>to</strong>wn of Clay<strong>to</strong>n. Soft rain is falling, the gentle rain that lingers<br />
after a heavy s<strong>to</strong>rm. Percy, a young man who is thought by many <strong>to</strong> be cursed with fewer brains<br />
than usual, is sitting alone watching the morning sky and playing his guitar.<br />
5. MUSIC. SOFT GUITAR MUSIC. MIXED WITH BIRD SONG.<br />
6. HELDA: (COMING IN BREATHLESS, YELLING) Oh, my God, my God.... (SEES PERCY)<br />
Percy...it’s awful.<br />
7. GUITAR MUSIC STOPS ABRUPTLY<br />
8. PERCY: (HUMBLY) I’m sorry, I didn’t mean....<br />
9. HELDA: Not your playing, stupid. The news....on the radio. I was in the s<strong>to</strong>re...and the radio news...you’ll<br />
never guess what happened.<br />
10. PERCY: (SOFTLY) I know what happened, Madam Helda.<br />
11. HELDA: You know (SCOFFING) <strong>How</strong> could you, Percy You don’t have a radio.<br />
12. PERCY: But I know.<br />
13. HELDA: (SCOFFING) All right then, tell me what happened.<br />
14. PERCY: The village...Smallwood...has been destroyed.<br />
15. HELDA: (AMAZED) <strong>How</strong>...how did you know No one knew until it came on the news...just now....the<br />
whole village...every house in Smallwood...washed down the side of the mountain. So many<br />
people killed. It’s awful.<br />
16. PERCY: I know, Madam Helda. The mountain <strong>to</strong>ld me...<br />
17. HELDA: The mountain <strong>to</strong>ld...oh you’re mad.... Somebody else came by and <strong>to</strong>ld you. All I can say is, I’m<br />
glad WE don’t live on the other side.<br />
18. PERCY: But we do...we DO live on the other side...we all live on the other side.<br />
19. HELDA: Stupid man. Look around you. We live here...in Clay<strong>to</strong>n. Smallwood is...was...<br />
(EMPHATICALLY) on the other side of the mountain...There’s a meeting at the church...right<br />
now...<strong>for</strong> those who want <strong>to</strong> help...I’m going .<br />
20. PERCY: A meeting...at the church.... That is good, that is right. We must help now. But that won’t solve<br />
the problem.<br />
21. HELDA: And I suppose you know what will...<br />
22. PERCY: Arithmetic.<br />
23. HELDA: Arithmetic I swear, Percy, you get madder by the minute.... Arithmetic, he says. Talk about<br />
living on the other side! (GOING OUT) He doesn’t even know where reality is.
