inclusion in the funding calculation. It is estimated that $142,600 (0.09%) will be
available for public art projects through the first five years of the 2010-15 program. The
actual art projects will be determined by the Public Art Committee.
Buildings
Since 2000, significant resources have been devoted to the construction of new and
expanded City facilities. Although the 2010-2015 CIP will still provide for the future
construction of new buildings, the emphasis of this category will shift more towards
building maintenance and upgrades, and the demolition and reconstruction of a
community shelter house. During the next five years, land will be acquired for a westside
Parks and Public Works Field Maintenance Facility. In addition, Fire Station No.
41 will be remodeled (2010) to accommodate full time staff, the parking lot at Fire
Station No. 42 will be expanded (2010) to replace some of the parking that was
removed when the fire training facility was built in 2009, and the Police access drive
from Douglas Avenue will be reconstructed (2010). The Walker Johnston Park shelter
house will be demolished (2011) to enable reconstruction in 2012 and 2013. Two
energy light conversions are planned (2010), which would result in the installation of
LED lights at numerous City facility parking lots, and lighting conversions at the Fire
station bays, and the Parks and Public Work garages and shops. Additionally, facility
maintenance projects are planned for the Library, Administrative Office Building and
Police Station beginning in 2011, to protect the City’s recent investments in the
facilities. In the long term (2015+), it is anticipated that modifications to existing Fire
Station No. 42 will be constructed for living quarters, and that new construction would
include a Fire Station No. 43, a pedestrian plaza at 86 th Street and Douglas Avenue,
and a Parks and Public Works Field Maintenance Facility.
Major Equipment
This category is primarily reserved for the purchase of fire related equipment. A
new ambulance would be purchased in 2011 as an addition to the fleet for a total of
four ambulances. A replacement fire pumper truck will be purchased in 2011 to
replace an existing 1991 unit.
Technology
This category recognizes the need to replace and upgrade the City’s technology
infrastructure on an ongoing basis, and to introduce technology that improves City
operations. In 2010, a computer training system and learning lab would be installed
at Fire Station No. 42, and would be linked to Fire Station No. 41, and to the Clive
and West Des Moines Fire Departments. The interactive computer training would
be available for staff on a 24/7 basis, and would cover a variety of Fire and EMS
topics to increase training efficiency.
