Bridges
During the next five years, two significant bridge construction projects will be
constructed. In 2011, a new Walnut Creek bridge is planned for construction in the
Walnut Creek Regional Park at Aurora Avenue, as a two-lane structure. In 2013, a
replacement Walnut Creek bridge is planned for construction at Meredith Drive, as
a five-lane structure. In the long term (2015+), a third structure, the 156 th Street
Bridge over Walnut Creek, is planned for reconstruction as a five-lane facility.
Sidewalks
In 2006, the Sidewalk Construction Program was updated to address the sidewalk
needs west of 100 th Street. Priority will be given to sidewalks required for the
designated safe school routes and along the City’s arterial and collector streets.
Additionally, missing sidewalk segments on residential streets will be constructed.
Most of these sidewalk improvements will be financed through special
assessments. Additionally, the Deer Creek Trail sidewalk would be installed in
2014 which would provide a connection to the Raccoon Valley Trail.
Storm Sewers
The City’s Department of Engineering and Public Works also updated the Storm
Sewer and Drainage Management Report in 2006. This report identified the repair
and improvement needs for the City’s storm sewer and drainage system and
prioritized the projects. The recommended CIP allocates $50,000 annually from
the General Fund for the drainageway repairs, coupled with bond funding for larger
priority projects. Additionally, a drainage concern on 104 th Street at Justin Drive will
be addressed in 2014, with a cost sharing option to be reviewed with the adjacent
property owner prior to the project.
Streets
Street improvement projects account for approximately 72.6% ($116,568,200) of
the costs associated with the recommended 2010-2015 Capital Improvements
Program. Some of the most significant projects in the CIP will create an arterial
street network west of I35/80. The highest priority project is the paving of Aurora
Avenue, west of 128 th Street to 142 nd Street (in 2010). The second priority is the
paving of Douglas Parkway, west of 156th Street to the west corporate limit (in
2010). This project will provide improved access to a new elementary school in the
Waukee Community School District. The third priority involves the paving of
Meredith Drive, from 142 nd Street to 154th Street (in 2013). Additionally, Aurora
Avenue through the Walnut Creek Regional Park would be constructed (in 2011)
for transportation purposes, since it would be the only east/west connection
between Douglas Parkway and Meredith Drive. Also, the Deer Creek subdivision
streets would be reconstructed (in 2010). In the long term (2015+), multiple street
improvement projects are planned along segments of Meredith Drive; Waterford
Road; 142 nd Street, and 156 th Street.
The CIP also provides for several street improvement projects along the I35/80
corridor. In the short term, these projects include the construction of Plum Drive,
between 86 th Street and 100 th Street (in 2010); the paving of the 100 th Street
