life.... [Paul] reflected the attitudes <strong>of</strong><br />

contemporary society towards women rather than<br />

what we may now believe to have been Jesus'<br />

own ideas.... We seem to be faced with a straight,<br />

first-century clash <strong>of</strong> theologies: Paul's on the one<br />

hand, based on his other-worldly [Damascus<br />

Road] experience; and James' [in his epistle],<br />

based on his fraternal knowledge <strong>of</strong> the human<br />

Jesus. And, despite the authority which should be<br />

due to the latter, it would seem to be Paul's that<br />

has been allowed to come down to us....<br />

Particularly significant is [James'] gentle but firm<br />

stance on the importance <strong>of</strong> Jesus' teaching on<br />

communal living.<br />
