considers the form and wording <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

sayings in comparison with the form in which they<br />

are preserved in the New Testament, <strong>The</strong> Gospel<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Thomas</strong> almost always appears to have<br />

preserved a more original form <strong>of</strong> the traditional<br />

saying. In its literary genre, <strong>The</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> <strong>Thomas</strong><br />

is more akin to one <strong>of</strong> the sources <strong>of</strong> the canonical<br />

gospels, namely the so-called Synoptic Sayings<br />

Source (<strong>of</strong>ten called ‘Q’ from the German Quelle,<br />

‘source’), which was used by both Matthew and<br />

Luke.... In its most original form, [<strong>Thomas</strong>] may<br />

well date from the first century.<br />
