Foreword<br />

This document was prepared with input from oil and gas operators, drilling c<strong>on</strong>tractors, service companies,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sultants and regulators. It is based mainly <strong>on</strong> experiences in the United States outer c<strong>on</strong>tinental shelf (OCS) and<br />

deepwater operating areas of the Gulf of Mexico, but may be of utility in other offshore and land operating areas. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>tent of this document is not all inclusive and not intended to alleviate the need for detailed informati<strong>on</strong> found in<br />

textbooks, manuals, technical papers, or other documents. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> formulati<strong>on</strong>, adopti<strong>on</strong>, and publicati<strong>on</strong> of API<br />

standards are not intended to inhibit any<strong>on</strong>e from using any other practices.<br />

A future planned standard, API RP 96, Deepwater Well Design C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s, will identify c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s for use in<br />

deepwater well design. API Std 65-2 has been written to complement the objectives of API RP 90 and API RP 96 and<br />

their recommended practices.<br />

Shall: As used in a standard, “shall” denotes a minimum requirement in order to c<strong>on</strong>form to the recommended<br />

practice.<br />

Should: As used in a standard, “should” denotes a recommendati<strong>on</strong> or that which is advised but not required in order<br />

to c<strong>on</strong>form to the standard.<br />

Informative elements: As used in a standard, “informative” denotes elements that: identify the document, introduce its<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tent and explain its background, development, and its relati<strong>on</strong>ship with other documents; or provide additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> intended to assist the understanding or use of the document.<br />

Normative elements: As used in a standard, “normative” denotes elements that describe the scope of the document,<br />

and which set out provisi<strong>on</strong>s that are required to implement the standard.Nothing c<strong>on</strong>tained in any API publicati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

to be c<strong>on</strong>strued as granting any right, by implicati<strong>on</strong> or otherwise, for the manufacture, sale, or use of any method,<br />

apparatus, or product covered by letters patent. Neither should anything c<strong>on</strong>tained in the publicati<strong>on</strong> be c<strong>on</strong>strued as<br />

insuring any<strong>on</strong>e against liability for infringement of letters patent.<br />

This document was produced under API standardizati<strong>on</strong> procedures that ensure appropriate notificati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

participati<strong>on</strong> in the developmental process and is designated as an API standard. Questi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cerning the<br />

interpretati<strong>on</strong> of the c<strong>on</strong>tent of this publicati<strong>on</strong> or comments and questi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cerning the procedures under which<br />
