c) Appropriate methods of collecting and recycling or disposing of waste generated during c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, operati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

and maintenance of the facility should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered.<br />

d) Operators should develop waste management plans. Refer to API Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Guidance Document: Onshore<br />

Solid Waste Management in Explorati<strong>on</strong> and Producti<strong>on</strong> Operati<strong>on</strong>s for additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

8.4 C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

8.4.1 Site Preparati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> following site preparati<strong>on</strong> steps must be taken before initiating c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>:<br />

a) soil characteristics should be checked to determine the appropriate foundati<strong>on</strong> design for the site;<br />

b) the size and type of equipment to be used during c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered to allow sufficient room to<br />

work in a safe manner;<br />

c) adequate culverts and drainage ditches should be provided as required by the local envir<strong>on</strong>ment;<br />

d) the open end of lines under c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> should be temporarily capped at the end of each workday if a line could<br />

be accessible to wildlife.<br />

8.4.2 Inspecti<strong>on</strong> and Testing<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> following inspecti<strong>on</strong> and testing steps must be taken before initiating c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

a) During c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, qualified pers<strong>on</strong>nel to ensure that design specificati<strong>on</strong>s are met should perform appropriate<br />

inspecti<strong>on</strong>s to ensure that design specificati<strong>on</strong>s are met.<br />

b) Up<strong>on</strong> completi<strong>on</strong>, equipment and facilities should be inspected for possible leaks. If necessary, equipment<br />

c) X-raying of welds should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered in critical areas where extreme pressure or corrosiveness is anticipated<br />

or where potential risk to the local envir<strong>on</strong>ment is of great c<strong>on</strong>cern.<br />

8.4.3 Qualificati<strong>on</strong> of Pers<strong>on</strong>nel<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> qualificati<strong>on</strong>s of pers<strong>on</strong>nel working <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> site should be evaluated to aid in ensuring the work will<br />

be properly performed.<br />

8.4.4 Selecti<strong>on</strong> of C<strong>on</strong>tractors<br />

C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> should be given to requiring c<strong>on</strong>tractors to have performance b<strong>on</strong>ds should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered when<br />

facilities are to be c<strong>on</strong>structed in envir<strong>on</strong>mentally sensitive areas.
