7.4 Intermediate Casing<br />

After the surface hole has been drilled and the surface casing has been set and properly cemented, drilling of the<br />

intermediate hole can commence. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> purpose of drilling the intermediate hole and running casing is to isolate<br />

subsurface formati<strong>on</strong>s that may cause borehole instability and to provide protecti<strong>on</strong> from abnormally pressured<br />

subsurface formati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

In some cases, the well can be drilled from the surface casing to total depth. In these cases, an intermediate casing<br />

string may not be required. This is determined by the geological setting prior to drilling, and is a part of the well design<br />

or is determined by data and measurements taken during the drilling process.<br />

In many cases, it is not necessary to cement the intermediate casing back to the surface to provide adequate<br />

isolati<strong>on</strong>. This is especially true in the cases where the surface casing string and cement are fully protecting the<br />

groundwater aquifers. Also, in many cases this is not advisable, as attempts to cement intermediate casing back to<br />

the surface can result in lost circulati<strong>on</strong>. If the intermediate casing is not cemented to the surface, at a minimum the<br />

cement should extend above any exposed USDW or any hydrocarb<strong>on</strong> bearing z<strong>on</strong>e.<br />

Depending <strong>on</strong> the well design, it may be appropriate to run a CBL and/or other diagnostic tool(s) to determine that the<br />

cement integrity is adequate to meet the well design and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> objectives.<br />

After the intermediate casing cement has achieved the appropriate compressive strength and prior to drilling out, the<br />

intermediate casing should be pressure tested (comm<strong>on</strong>ly known as a casing pressure test). This test should be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted at a pressure that will determine if the casing integrity is adequate to meet the well design and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

objectives.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong>, immediately after drilling out of the intermediate casing plus a short interval of new formati<strong>on</strong> below the<br />

intermediate casing shoe, a formati<strong>on</strong> pressure integrity test (also known as a “shoe test” or “leak-off test”) should be<br />

performed. If the test results of the formati<strong>on</strong> pressure integrity test are inadequate or indicate a failure, remedial<br />

measures should be undertaken as appropriate. In particular, in the case of a failure, remedial cementing operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

should be undertaken as appropriate. This is critical to maintaining well integrity.<br />

7.5 Producti<strong>on</strong> Casing<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> final hole to be drilled is the hole for the producti<strong>on</strong> casing. After the producti<strong>on</strong> hole is drilled and logged,<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> casing is run to the total depth of the well and cemented in place using proper cementing practices. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

purpose of the producti<strong>on</strong> casing is to provide the z<strong>on</strong>al isolati<strong>on</strong> between the producing z<strong>on</strong>e and all other<br />

subsurface formati<strong>on</strong>s, for pumping the hydraulic fracturing fluids and other stimulati<strong>on</strong> techniques from the surface<br />

into the producing formati<strong>on</strong> without affecting any other geologic horiz<strong>on</strong> in the well. It also c<strong>on</strong>tains the downhole<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> equipment (tubing, packer, etc.). Over the life of the well, its most important functi<strong>on</strong> is internally c<strong>on</strong>taining<br />

the hydrocarb<strong>on</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> from the producing z<strong>on</strong>e. In most cases, it serves as a sec<strong>on</strong>dary barrier for the<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> tubing and packer that are inserted into the producti<strong>on</strong> casing in the final completi<strong>on</strong> step.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are many opti<strong>on</strong>s for cementati<strong>on</strong>. In most cases, the producti<strong>on</strong> string cement does not need to be brought<br />

completely to the surface. This depends <strong>on</strong> the geologic setting, well design, and wellbore c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. In cases where<br />

intermediate casing is not installed, cementing the producti<strong>on</strong> casing to the surface should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered. At a<br />

minimum, the tail cement should be brought at least 500 ft above the highest formati<strong>on</strong> where hydraulic fracturing will<br />

be performed. In all cases, the casing is cemented to achieve the required subsurface isolati<strong>on</strong> between z<strong>on</strong>es.<br />

Prior to perforating and hydraulic fracturing operati<strong>on</strong>s, the producti<strong>on</strong> casing should be pressure tested (comm<strong>on</strong>ly<br />

known as a casing pressure test). This test should be c<strong>on</strong>ducted at a pressure that will determine if the casing<br />

integrity is adequate to meet the well design and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> objectives. A CBL and/or other diagnostic tool(s) should<br />

be run to determine that the cement integrity is adequate to meet the well design and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> objectives.<br />

Remedial cementing operati<strong>on</strong>s should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered if there is evidence of inadequate cement integrity.
