Chapter 28: Surah <strong>al</strong>-Qasas<br />

In the name of <strong>Al</strong>lah, the Beneficent, the Merciful<br />

(Lo! thou (O Muhammad) guidest not whom thou lovest…) [28:56].<br />

Abu ‘Abd <strong>Al</strong>lah Muhammad ibn ‘Abd <strong>Al</strong>lah <strong>al</strong>-Shirazi informed us> Muhammad ibn ‘Abd <strong>Al</strong>lah ibn<br />

Muhammad ibn Khamrawayh> ‘<strong>Al</strong>i ibn Muhammad <strong>al</strong>-Khuza‘i> Abu’l-Yaman <strong>al</strong>-Hakam ibn Nafi‘><br />

Shu‘ayb> <strong>al</strong>-Zuhri> Sa‘id ibn <strong>al</strong>-Musayyab> his father who said: “When death was about to overtake Abu<br />

T<strong>al</strong>ib, the Messenger of <strong>Al</strong>lah, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless him and give him peace, went to see him and there he found<br />

with him Abu Jahl and ‘Abd <strong>Al</strong>lah ibn Abi Umayyah. <strong>The</strong> Messenger of <strong>Al</strong>lah, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless him and give<br />

him peace, addressed his uncle: ‘O uncle, say, there is no deity save <strong>Al</strong>lah, and I will argue, by means of it,<br />

in your favour with <strong>Al</strong>lah, Glorious and Ex<strong>al</strong>ted is He’. Abu Jahl and ‘Abd <strong>Al</strong>lah ibn Abi Umayyah said: ‘O<br />

Abu T<strong>al</strong>ib, would you shun the religion of ‘Abd <strong>al</strong>-Mutt<strong>al</strong>ib’ <strong>The</strong> Messenger of <strong>Al</strong>lah, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless him and<br />

give him peace, kept inviting him and repeating his words until the last thing that Abu T<strong>al</strong>ib said was: ‘I<br />

follow the religion of ‘Abd <strong>al</strong>-Mutt<strong>al</strong>ib’, and he refused to say, there is no deity save <strong>Al</strong>lah. At that point<br />

the Messenger of <strong>Al</strong>lah, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless him and give him peace, said: ‘By <strong>Al</strong>lah, I will ask <strong>Al</strong>lah for your<br />

forgiveness for as long as I am not forbidden from doing so’. <strong>The</strong>n, <strong>Al</strong>lah, glorious and majestic is He,<br />

reve<strong>al</strong>ed (It is not for the Prophet, and those who believe, to pray for the forgiveness of idolaters even though<br />

they may be near of kin (to them) after it hath become clear that they are people of Hell-fire) [9:113]. He<br />

<strong>al</strong>so reve<strong>al</strong>ed about Abu T<strong>al</strong>ib (Lo! thou (O Muhammad) guidest not whom thou lovest, but <strong>Al</strong>lah guideth<br />

whom He will)”. 1 This was narrated by Bukhari> Abu’l-Yaman> Shu‘ayb and <strong>al</strong>so by Muslim> Harm<strong>al</strong>ah><br />

Ibn Wahb> Yunus; and both Yunus and Shu‘ayb related it from <strong>al</strong>-Zuhri.<br />

Master Abu Ishaq Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim informed us> <strong>al</strong>-Hasan ibn Muhammad <strong>al</strong>-<br />

Shaybani> Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn <strong>al</strong>-Hasan <strong>al</strong>-Hafiz> Abu ‘Abd <strong>al</strong>-Rahman ibn Bishr> Yahya ibn<br />

Sa‘id>> Yazid ibn Kaysan> Abu Hazim> Abu Hurayrah who said: “<strong>The</strong> Messenger of <strong>Al</strong>lah, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless<br />

him and give him peace, said to his uncle: ‘Say: there is no deity save <strong>Al</strong>lah, and I will be witness, by<br />

means of it, for you on the Day of Judgement’. His uncle said: ‘If I did not fear that the Quraysh will revile<br />

me by saying that it was fear [of death] that drove me to say it, I would have pleased you by saying<br />

it’. <strong>Al</strong>lah, ex<strong>al</strong>ted is He, then reve<strong>al</strong>ed (Lo! thou (O Muhammad) guidest not whom thou lovest, but <strong>Al</strong>lah<br />

guideth whom He will)”. 2 This was narrated by Muslim> Muhammad ibn Hatim> Yahya ibn Sa‘id.<br />

He said: “I heard Abu ‘Uthman <strong>al</strong>-Hiri> <strong>al</strong>-Hasan ibn Miqsam> Abu Ishaq <strong>al</strong>-Zajjaj who said regarding<br />

this verse: ‘<strong>The</strong> commentators of the Qur’an are in consensus that it was reve<strong>al</strong>ed about Abu T<strong>al</strong>ib’ ”. 3<br />

(And they say: If we were to follow the Guidance with thee we should be torn out of our land…) [28:57].<br />

This verse was reve<strong>al</strong>ed about <strong>al</strong>-Harith ibn ‘Uthman ibn Nawf<strong>al</strong> ibn ‘Abd Manaf when he said to the<br />

Prophet, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless him and give him peace: “We know that what you say is the truth. However, what<br />

prevents us from following you is the fear that the Arabs will drive us out of our land, since they are<br />

unanimously against us and we have no power against them”. <strong>The</strong>refore, <strong>Al</strong>lah, ex<strong>al</strong>ted is He, reve<strong>al</strong>ed<br />

this verse.<br />

(Is he whom We have promised a fair promise which he will find (true)…) [28:61].<br />

Abu Bakr <strong>al</strong>-Harithi informed us> Abu’l-Shaykh <strong>al</strong>-Hafiz> Muhammad ibn Sulayman> ‘Abd <strong>Al</strong>lah ibn<br />
