Asbab <strong>al</strong>-Nuzul<br />

Hazim <strong>al</strong>-Ayli> Bad<strong>al</strong> ibn <strong>al</strong>-Muhabbar> Shu‘bah> Aban> Mujahid who said, regarding this verse: “This<br />

verse was reve<strong>al</strong>ed about ‘<strong>Al</strong>i, Hamzah and Abu Jahl”. 4<br />

<strong>Al</strong>-Suddi said: “This verse was reve<strong>al</strong>ed about ‘Ammar and <strong>al</strong>-W<strong>al</strong>id ibn <strong>al</strong>-Mughirah”. It was <strong>al</strong>so said<br />

that it was reve<strong>al</strong>ed about the Messenger of <strong>Al</strong>lah, <strong>Al</strong>lah bless him and give him peace and Abu Jahl.<br />

(Thy Lord bringeth to pass what He willeth and chooseth…) [28:68].<br />

<strong>The</strong> speci<strong>al</strong>ists of Qur’anic exegesis said: “This verse was reve<strong>al</strong>ed as an answer to <strong>al</strong>-W<strong>al</strong>id ibn <strong>al</strong>-Mughirah<br />

when he said, as reported by <strong>Al</strong>lah, ex<strong>al</strong>ted is He, in the Qur’an (And they say: If only this Qur’an<br />

had been reve<strong>al</strong>ed to some great man of the two towns) [43:31]. <strong>Al</strong>lah, ex<strong>al</strong>ted is He, informed that the<br />

messengers are not sent of their own accord”. 5<br />
