Large scale structures have been built <strong>on</strong> many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
the coastal areas without due c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> to the<br />
potential impacts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sea level rise.<br />
• Polluti<strong>on</strong> and water scarcity<br />
Excessive domestic and industrial polluti<strong>on</strong> is<br />
characteristic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> many coastal cities in the <strong>Arab</strong><br />
regi<strong>on</strong>. Even though there are many laws and<br />
regulati<strong>on</strong>s against domestic and industrial polluti<strong>on</strong>,<br />
very limited c<strong>on</strong>trol is actually exercised<br />
because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> instituti<strong>on</strong>al capabilities<br />
for m<strong>on</strong>itoring and c<strong>on</strong>trol.<br />
Moreover, the situati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> water scarcity that prevails<br />
over the regi<strong>on</strong> has been a decisive political,<br />
geographic and domestic factor in the regi<strong>on</strong>’s<br />
development. C<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground water<br />
and impacts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> wastewater are widespread in<br />
many rural areas.
