SECTION 1.4 The Governing Body and other Fellows STAFF AND FELLOWS THE GOVERNING BODY The Governing Body is made up of current Fellows. A full list of the current Fellows can be found on the College website under Fellows – Master and Fellows of Downing College, Cambridge. A prospective Fellow must be voted onto the Governing Body by its current members, according to the rules set out in the Statutes, and when his or her tenure expires, he or she may stand for re-election for a further period. Fellows retire from the Governing Body when they reach 67 years of age. The following categories of Fellow enjoy certain rights and privileges but they are not members of the Governing Body and thus have no powers relating to the day to day business of the College. HONORARY FELLOWS The Governing Body may, from time to time, vote to elect a distinguished person as an Honorary Fellow. This person is usually, but need not be, a member of the College or of the University. In order for the individual concerned to be elected, a significant majority of the members of the Governing Body have to vote in favour of electing him or her, according to the rules set out in the College Statutes. EMERITUS FELLOWS When a Fellow retires, or leaves the College having given valuable service over a significant period of time (20 years) the Governing body may vote to confer upon him or her the title of Emeritus Fellow. 18 S TAFF HANDBOOK

ASSOCIATE FELLOWS SECTION 1.4 STAFF AND FELLOWS Associate Fellows are members of Downing upon whom the Governing Body wishes to confer this title in recognition of the contribution they make to College, often in their professional capacity, for example with legal advice, or because of their work for the Downing Association. WILKINS FELLOWS Once a benefactor has donated a designated minimum sum to the College, they become eligible to be elected as a Wilkins Fellow. Wilkins Fellows are invited to important College occasions and to the Master’s Consultative Council once a year. FELLOW COMMONERS Fellow Commoners are normally involved in some significant way with the day to day running of the College, for example as Development Director, Domus Bursar or Chaplain, or by sitting on a College Committee. However, Fellow Commoners do not have voting rights at Governing Body meetings. BYE-FELLOWS In order to fulfil all the educational needs of our students, assistance is required from individuals outside the College to direct studies or to lecture in a variety of subjects. In recognition of this contribution, the Governing Body annually elects certain individuals, who are not already Fellows of other Colleges, as Bye-Fellows of Downing College. STAFF HANDBOOK 19
