WELCOME
Welcome from Professor Barry Everitt.
Downing College Master.
I am delighted, on behalf of the members and staff, to welcome
you to Downing and also to the University of Cambridge.
The aim of this Handbook is to ease you into the day-to-day
life and work of the College, which take place amidst the
beauty and tranquillity of our domus.
I am aware of the unfamiliarity and complexities of starting
work in new surroundings and the uncertainties which accompany
any new work venture. The information, policies and procedures
in this publication have been put together to aid you throughout
your working life here with us.
The College enters its third century as an institution devoted to
higher education and research. We aim to ensure that jointly we
build upon our strengths while enabling our employees to develop
their full potential and therefore enjoy greater job satisfaction.
We aim to recognise and reward the effort and talent expended by
staff in their daily activities.
This Handbook will continue to be extended and updated as
policies and work practices evolve, and I urge you to make yourself
familiar with its contents and to seek advice and clarity on any
issues, where necessary, from our friendly and helpful team who
are available at all levels throughout the College.
