Downing College history SECTION 1.1 Downing was founded by Sir George Downing, third baronet, with wealth left by his grandfather, the first baronet, who served both Cromwell and Charles II and who built No. 10 Downing Street, which has been the London home of the Prime Minister since 1732. ABOUT OUR COLLEGE Downing College history Building began at Downing early in the nineteenth century and has continued to the present day. The College has a unique and magnificent setting among twenty acres of lawns and trees, yet it is located close to the centre of Cambridge. The superb collection of buildings, which are predominately neoclassical in style, convey a sense of elegance and spaciousness, enhanced by harmonious proportions, graceful columned porticos, and delicate pink and yellow Ketton stone. Downing is, as are all Cambridge Colleges, an independent self-governing community that forms part of the University of Cambridge. Our students come from all types of schools and colleges from all over the world, and there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Downing student. In terms of numbers, we are a medium-sized College with approximately 660 students, of whom 395 are undergraduates and 265 are graduate students. There are 45 Fellows, who together with the Master are the Governing Body. Most of the Fellows are also attached to the University as Lecturers and Professors. There are over 140 staff. Our aim is to provide an agreeable and supportive environment for all of our members and employees. Most of the undergraduates live on site, either on the Domus, the name given to the main site, or in the houses on Lensfield Road adjoining the main site. Outside term time, we provide excellent facilities and accommodation within the main courts of the College for conferences and similar events. These are always in high demand. HANDBOOK PAGE 7
