Graceful Numbering of Graphs<br />

The dots and segments joining the dots in the graphs below are to be<br />

numbered by the following rules.<br />

(1) Each dot is to be numbered <strong>with</strong> a different nonnegative integer.<br />

(2) Each segment is to be labeled <strong>with</strong> the positive difference of the<br />

numbers for the dots that it connects. These numbers must all be<br />

different.<br />

A graceful numbering of the graph requires that the greatest number<br />

used to label a dot be equal to the total number of segments.<br />

Work <strong>with</strong> your group to see if you can find graceful numberings<br />

for these graphs.<br />
