Business Development Prospects 25 Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East currently consume about 12 bcm of gas. Over a third of this volume is the so-called “local consumption” (Krasnoyarsk and Kamchatka Territories, and the Irkutsk Region), not connected with gas supplies via trunk pipelines. According to forecasts, the aggregate demand for gas from end consumers in Russia’s Eastern regions may reach 17 to 30 bcm per year by 2030. The bulk of this growth is expected to come from Russian regions in the immediate vicinity to the existing or anticipated trunk pipelines, Sakhalin — Khabarovsk — Vladivostok and Power of Siberia. Vast territories and complex terrain, as well as long distances between industrial centres and low population density imply substantial length of trunk pipelines and distribution networks and the region’s relatively low potential consumption.
